Seattle Chiropractor Discusses Tips For the
Walking Commuter

Hi, it’s Dr. Zapata with Emerald City Spinal Care here once again to share another Tip of the Week! This weeks tip is for all of you folks out there in Seattle who are lucky enough to walk to work.

A walking commute may sound like a dream, but it certainly is not without its challenges! What I am going to do today is share 4 tips to help ensure that your walking commute is as enjoyable and pleasant as possible.

  • Tip number one is to prepare for bad weather. Grab an umbrella, a rain jacket, or a heavy coat if you need to. Also, be sure to check your favorite weather app before heading out the door. Because, while it may be sunny when you leave the house, in Seattle that doesn’t really mean a whole lot during fall, spring and winter! As anyone who has lived in Seattle through all four seasons knows….a rain-storm could be just a few minutes away.
  • Tip number two is to wear the right shoes. It is important to wear comfortable and supportive walking shoes when your commute involves a lot of walking!  If you want, you can always bring you nicer, more work appropriate shoes, in with you and change into them once you arrive at work.
  • Tip number three is to try a fitness tracker. It will help keep you motivated to keep on stepping. Plus, you can even start a friendly competition to compare steps with friends or co-workers.
  • The fourth and final tip I have for you is to grab a backpack. Ditch your purse or briefcase and try walking to work with a backpack instead. A backpack is great because it will help you to balance and carry weight more evenly, which can result in less back, neck and shoulder pain.
